Making the Most of Every Nook and Cranny
Creativity and vision can take undervalued square footage from useless to functional, and even elevate a space to fabulous. Be it an empty spot beneath a set of stairs, a dead-end hallway, or an awkward alcove—these oft-overlooked areas can have purpose and be alluring.
PWD Studio, an interior design firm in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, introduced a niche into a curved plaster wall to highlight a marble sculpture in a narrow corridor, which is customary in historical Charleston houses.
“We had a narrow hallway that led to a wide hallway through a cased opening,” says Patti Wilbourne, founder of PWD Studio. “The home's exterior arches inspired us to bring that same architectural language inside. We wanted this space to feel intentional and naturally cohesive with the rest of the home's formal, Italianate style.”
