Southern Living: 6 Bathroom Tile Patterns Designers Are Ready To Say Goodbye To
Say goodbye to that tile...
Southern designers aren't shy about voicing their thoughts on styles of bathroom tile that they simply don't find appealing. If you're looking to make over one of the bathrooms in your home, you'll want to keep the below takes top of mind to ensure that the space you design is elevated, not dated.
Arabesque Tile
This artful tile design is one that Patti Wilbourne, the founder of PWD Studio in Charleston, South Carolina, is ready to retire for a handful of reasons. "It feels dated, has limited application, and it’s difficult to start or stop the pattern without creating an obvious visual interruption," she says.
Glass Mosaic Tiles
Popular in the early 2000s, this style of tile is so significantly moment in time that Wilbourne doesn't want to use it now. "Their look is so tied to that era that they instantly date a space," she says.
Tile In Various Shades Of White
Last but not least, Wilbourne does not like when people design bathrooms that feature a mixture of various white tiles—sometimes, she explains, the floors, walls, and showers will all reflect a different style. "While it sounds clean and cohesive, the lack of contrast actually highlights the subtle mismatches in undertone, size, texture, and style, making the space feel disjointed rather than seamless," the designer says.
