2026 Carolopolis Award Winners + Preserving History in Charleston

Carolopolis Awards honor both private and public projects that preserve that history.
So many things make Charleston, Charleston — and history is undoubtedly one of those things. Recently, 29 projects were recognized for playing a role in preserving history.
Did you know? The name Carolopolis comes from the Latin Carolus, meaning Charles (aka King Charles II), and the Greek polis, meaning city.
The Preservation Society of Charleston hosted the Carolopolis Awards — honoring residential, commercial, and institutional projects that help buildings maintain the character + authenticity of the Charleston area. This year’s Carolopolis Awards are located in downtown Charleston, West Ashley, Sullivan’s Island, Edisto Island, and, for the first time, Park Circle.
PWD Studio was awarded an exterior award for our work done in the Radcliffborough of downtown Charleston.
Built in 1832 by John M. VanRhyn, this Charleston single house is a refined example of the Federal style, defined by symmetry and restraint. Its Palladian and semi circular windows, elliptical fanlight, and curving entry steps remain intact, later layered with Victorian piazzas.
When acquired in 2022, the home carried both elegance and evidence of time, including termite damage and a compromised rear addition. Restoration revealed original heart pine framing and historic masonry, guiding a thoughtful rehabilitation. Original piazza doors, balusters, and trim were carefully restored or replicated by hand. Each exterior decision was grounded in historical accuracy, ensuring the home’s Federal character remained intact.
This award is a celebration of preservation and stewarding layered history with care, intention, and respect. We are deeply grateful to play a role in continuing Charleston’s architectural legacy, one house at a time.
